COURSE DESCRIPTION

• What is technology? Is it merely a supporting tool, or does it function as a medium that shapes cultural identity and experience?
• How does the digital condition influence the ways individuals and communities remember and forget?
• In what ways does digital cultural heritage shape narratives of the past and history?
• How does digital technology redefine the relationship between communities and cultural heritage?

The course examines the dynamic relationship between culture and technology, focusing on the role of digital media in shaping cultural memory, historical narratives, the reception of cultural heritage, and community engagement with it. Special emphasis is placed on the intersection of digitality and memory, as well as the role of digital archives and museums in constructing identities.

The course combines theoretical analysis with an applied approach. Lectures are complemented by seminar activities, designed to encourage students to critically engage with the contemporary conditions of cultural production in digital environments.

During the current semester, students will experiment with the development of the “Digital Museum of Neochori.” This project aims to showcase the history of the village of Pelion through personal artifacts and the life stories of its inhabitants. The platform will serve as both an archive and a museum, displaying archival materials, letters, photographs of residents, and oral testimonies. This original material will be organized and documented by students as part of the course, providing them with a space to experiment with digital methods of cultural production.
