COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course introduces students to the major theories and practices of curating and museology, examining how museums, exhibitions, collections, and cultural institutions produce, organize, and mediate cultural narratives. Particular emphasis is placed on the historical evolution of the museum as an institution, changing conceptions of collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting cultural objects, and the social, political, and ideological dimensions of museum representations. The course also examines the emergence of curating as an autonomous field of theory and practice. The increasing significance of the curator in art and culture is linked to their expanded role in shaping exhibition narratives, producing knowledge, designing audience experiences, and managing complex cultural projects. Through case studies drawn from museums, contemporary art, public space, and participatory cultural initiatives, the course explores curating as a mode of research, cultural mediation, and social intervention. Contemporary challenges such as accessibility, participation, decolonization, digital technologies, and new forms of cultural experience are also addressed.
