Maria Paschalidou is an artist/researcher. Her conceptual work includes intermediate participatory events and spatial installations, in which static and moving image are combined with sound, projection, text and participatory interaction. She holds a PhD in Lens-based Media (De Montfort University, UK) with a theoretical and practical dissertation on their performativity and the formation of phantasmagoric subjects in the public/participatory space, while her postgraduate studies in Photography (MFA, Columbia College Chicago, USA) focused on the optical systems of human medical monitoring. She also studied Economics (BA, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki). As a fellow of the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (2019-2021), with excellent distinction, she conducted her postdoctoral research on the performative aspects of political loss, in collaboration with the Department of Social Anthropology (Panteion University, Athens). In the context of exploring acts that generate displacements and challenge positions, such as artist-spectator, words-image, theory-praxis, she has curated two international exhibitions (Ekecheiria- Chicago 2004, The Art of Artist Statement, [co-curatorial]- Chicago 2005) and the participatory performative projects, Visibility (Athens 2007) and The Bankorgs (Athens 2015). Her artwork has been presented in international and Greek publications (Routledge, Bloomsbury, Ekkremes) as well as in exhibitions in Europe, USA, Canada, Russia, Australia and Asia.
