Orestis Pagkalos is an architect, visual artist, Doctor of Art Theory, and university lecturer. He is affiliated with the Department of Culture and Creative Media and Industries (CCMI) as a postdoctoral researcher, academic fellow (since 2022), and member of the Laboratory of Culture and Digital Media.
At the same time, he teaches in the MA program Semiotics, Culture and Communication at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (since 2020), in the MA program Tourism and Culture: Design and Development at the University of Thessaly, and in the MA program Philosophy and the Arts at the Hellenic Open University.
He has also taught both studio-based and theoretical courses (as a lead instructor) in the MA program Visual Arts – Art and Public Space at the Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences of the School of Fine Arts, University of Ioannina (2020–2023), and in the MA program Advanced Computer and Communication Systems at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in the specialization Audio and Visual Technologies in Production and Education (2017–2021).
He is a member of the organizing team of the international book fair Unlock, head of the scientific committee of the Tag Conference: Name-writing in public space in history and today (held in Berlin, Amsterdam, Brooklyn, Hamburg), and a member of the scientific committee of the international conference Art & Place.
Since 1993, he has been actively involved in street art, having completed hundreds of murals and public installations. He is considered one of the most influential graffiti artists in the Greek scene. From 1997 to 2001, he was editor of the first Greek magazine dedicated to graffiti, and since 2016 he has been co-editor of the book series The History of Graffiti in Greece.
His activities include installations in exhibitions, coordination of workshops, creation of music videos, and participation in documentaries. He has also participated professionally in Erasmus+ research programs. He has been a member of various artistic, research, and broader cultural collectives, street art groups, and music bands.
His visual artworks and photographs have been published in books and magazines in Greece and abroad (New York, Paris, Stockholm, London, Berlin, Prague), while his texts have appeared in both national and international publications.
