Ismini Gatou holds a PhD from the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication of the University of the Aegean. She works at the intersection between research and art, bringing together concepts and “tools” from media studies, cultural studies, philosophy, anthropology, sound and performance studies. In her artistic practice she brings-together research-creation methodologies with multimodal and sensory ethnography research-practices, while experimenting with various materials, media and forms such as interactive digital applications, field/voice recordings, multimedia mapping, sound compositions, locative media arts. Her thesis entitled “Narratives and affect in motion. A research-creation on spatial experience through the use of mobile digital media“, which was carried out with scholarships from the A.G. Leventis Foundation and the IKY Foundation, focused on issues of spatiality, mobility/non-mobility and the politics of dwelling in America Square (Athens), seen through the sound-based locative condition. She has completed postgraduate studies in Cultural Informatics (University of the Aegean), with a scholarship from the A.G. Leventis Foundation, and Cultural Management (Panteion University). She holds a degree from the Department of Communication and Media (NKUA). Her work has been published with announcements in local and international conferences, with publications in print and online journals, as well as with participations in exhibitions and art festivals in Greece and abroad. She has been a member of the NACUSSO group ─organization for research and creative practice in the field of acoustic ecology. She is a member of akoo.o ─group of artists and researchers who use sound and mobility as artistic and research tools. She has received the ARTWORKS Award (visual arts | sub-category: multiple & new media) and was a fellow of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Artist Fellowship Program (2022-23).
