COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course examines the relationship between architecture, urban space, and social practices. It combines theoretical analysis, with emphasis on Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts (habitus, taste, cultural capital), with a historical overview of Greek architecture focusing on three main types of dwelling: the neoclassical townhouse, the Modernist apartment block, and the postwar antiparochi apartment building, along with so-called “vernacular” architecture. Through ethnographic studies, neighborhood analysis, and experiential exercises, students explore how social perceptions and aesthetics shape the city and everyday life. The course includes discussions, debates, and hands-on observation practices, fostering critical thinking and the connection between theory and practice.
